Kawaza Village
From the Village Committee ...
Code of Ethical Behavior for the visitors to Kawaza Village
To minimise the potential negative impacts that western culture could have on the traditional way of life of local people in Kawaza Village, we would be very grateful if visitors to our home would observe the following:
- Please dress modestly. Men are able to wear shorts but we would prefer ladies to wear a chitenge (Zambian female wrap around skirt), long skirt/dress or trousers.
- Over the top public displays of affection between men and women can embarrass some villagers, as it is not our custom to do so. People should not be 'passionate' in public!
- For politeness to villagers, please always ask them if it is OK to take photographs or video footage of them.
- Giving money or gifts to villagers that you meet serves to propagate and encourage begging, which is demeaning to local people. If you would like to give donations of money or gifts to villagers please direct these through the Kawaza Village committee who will ensure that your donation benefits the wider community.
- You are greatly encouraged to join in freely with all activities in the village e.g. cooking, dancing and the like. Don't be shy - we would be very happy if you were free with us and embraced our culture.
- Please bring photographs with you of your home and family to share with us. We at Kawaza Village would also like to learn about your culture and ways of living.
