Birding at Robin’s House
Mum and Dad are “twitchers”. They deny it of course but they are. All our holidays are planned around where they can get great birdwatching. Zambia’s South Luangwa has been on the fridge door list for years and finally we went. Robin’s House (they even find somewhere with a birds in the name!). Of course I wanted to go on safari. Who wouldn’t? But would it be as good as the Mara where we went before. Well it was – even better. Obi was our guide and he was able to juggle the birding and the wildlife viewing very easily. Clearly he had done this before!
The house is on the river so we had a great view and the hippos honked all night outside our window. Our bedroom had 3 beds and a private large bathroom – large enough for us all to be in there at once. And M&D had a very smart bedroom and bathroom. Beanz (yes!) looked after us. She asked about what food we liked so we had meals we could all eat. We ate mostly outside, under a huge tree, next to the river. But there was also a sitting and dinning room. My sister is a beast with the early morning so one day all the kids stayed in while mum and dad went on an exclusive birding drive (how dull!). After our lie in, Beanz made the morning so much fun – we made chocolate krispies for the afternoon tea, went on a short walk to explore the cool things around the house and made lots of splashes in the pool.
The gameviewing was wicked – lions, leopard, elephant, giraffe, hippo, buffalo and of course lots of antelope and small things. Birds? Well M&D “bagged” over a 120 species and they seemed very chuffed about this. And most of all we had fun – with Obi, Beanz and Thomas how could you fail?
It was great.
