Shiwa Ng'andu

Open April - December for fly in safaris and all year for drive in safaris

This historic house is in the remote heart of northern Zambian and is a majestic home built in the wilderness in 1921 by Sir Stewart Gore-Browne and his wife Lorna. He wanted to create an "Africa Utopia" in the wilderness and designed the project on an English country estate. It was recently on the brink on collapse when their grandson Charlie Harvey and his wife Jo took on the job of renovating this amazing property. It is now open to the public and is a fascinating 3 or 4 night addition to any safari. They are always on hand and do the hosting themselves. Their insight into the history of the house, and the task of building this odditiy in the African bush is in itself worth the trip. At present the house can accommodate 4 -5 couples. All rooms are simple with original hardwood furnishings and paintings and ensuite bathrooms.

Fireplaces are lit every night and the atmosphere at Shiwa is unique. The food is good, simple wholesome farm-fare. The garden is full of beautiful flowers and the lawns well maintained. Guests have complete run of the house and many spend hours enjoying the library of Sir Stewart's books, record collections and in the archives. Outdoors, there is plenty to do with gameviewing, boating on the lake, fishing, superb bird watching, horse riding for the experienced, river walks, historical drives and walks, meeting the people on the estate, visiting the schools and hospital and other on-going projects.

Kapishya Hot Springs is some 20 km away and worth a visit for a dip in the springs and some excellent bird watching along the river.
