Bush camping in the Emerald Season

This safari offers a unique bush camping experience in a prime location of the South Luangwa during the underrated Emerald Season. The Luangwa Valley is at its most dramatic in the Emerald Season, with the Luangwa River now flowing over into the brimming lagoons.

Always after offering off the beaten track experiences, we launched the safari during the month of April to give a different dimension to bush camping when the Luangwa Valley is lush & green. A combination of two fixed camps: Nkwali Camp & Luangwa River Camp and an overnight ‘camping’ will make for an exceptional safari especially for this time of year. Activities will include walking, game drives and possibly boating (largely depends on how much rain fall the Valley would have received).

Day 1 - 3: Nkwali Camp

Nkwali Camp is located on the banks of the Luangwa on a magnificent meander in the river overlooking the National Park where leopards roam along the bank and can often be spotted from camp. It is the starting point of your Emerald Season Bush Camping. Situated on Robin Pope Safaris’ private land outside the park there is a private game viewing area behind camp as well as exclusive access into the park either by boat or across the pontoon. The South Luangwa Park is 9050 sq. kilometer; with the river, its tributaries and lagoons being the focus of the wildlife viewing.

During your time at Nkwali Camp, you have the option of 2 game activities per day, with the choice of a game drive or a walking safari and possibly a boating excursion depending on the water levels of the Luangwa River. On Day 3, after an early breakfast you will walk to the bush camping site, taking in the sights and sounds along the way. You will spend the next night or two immersed in the wilderness, in meru style tents that are rustic but provide you with all the creature comforts such as a hot shower and delicious meals. The campsite is located in a game rich area and you will spend you time exploring the area on foot. Those wishing to stay more than one night are welcome to do so.

Day 4 - 5: Luangwa River Camp

After your time bush camping, it's on to Luangwa River Camp to enjoy some understated luxury. The Camp is situated opposite the Luangwa Wafwa (a game rich area of the park) in the Upper Lupande Game Management Area. It offers all the usual comforts of a camp yet with all the intimacy, tailored activities and flexible mealtimes you come to expect from a bush camp. The camp is unique with its décor of locally crafted and handmade details. The main area is elevated, affording you great views to the park and river.

Depending on your arrival time you may settle in for some lunch, siesta then off on an afternoon activity. There is an option to turn back after sundowners or continue to see what nocturnals you can spot, returning to camp by 8pm. There is also an option to visit a local visit or cultural centre to learn more about the Zambian way of life.

We had a truly special bush camping experience, having never been on safari in the green season. We were not prepare for the magic that the Luangwa Valley had to offer, having been transformed into a lush emerald green wonderland. Charlotte B about Emerald Season Bush Camping
The Emerald Season Bush Camping was an unforgettable trip. Seeing the South Luangwa during the green season was truly spectacular. We had been warned not to have high expectations for big game viewing but we were blown away but all that we saw. Lion, leopard wild dog and more. The birding was incredible and the game activities were a lot of fun!
