Family Safari in the Luangwa

A family retreat

Looking for an active safari that suits the whole family…? This safari offers the perfect mix for any family – Zambia’s Livingstone, home to the spectacular Victoria Falls and that country’s premier park, South Luangwa; ending off at the pristine shores of Lake Malawi. It offers loads of opportunity for much needed quality time for the family as well; with all properties having an option of exclusive family accommodation.

Livingstone is home to one of the seven natural wonders of the world, The Victoria Falls, and offers many opportunities, both adrenaline filled and more sedate, to view this amazing site. While staying at Stanley Safari Lodge there are game viewing opportunities too, with a chance to see the white rhino in Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park and river trips on the Zambezi River.

South Luangwa National Park marks the end of the Great Rift Valley, is one of the last unspoilt wilderness areas and possibly the finest wildlife sanctuary in Africa, through which the meandering Luangwa River runs. The ox bow lagoons, woodland and plains of the valley host huge concentrations of game – including elephant, buffalo, leopard, lion, giraffe, hippo – and over 450 species of birds. Robin’s House offers the perfect family getaway.

Pumulani Lodge is the last stop on the safari and is located on the Nankumba Peninsula, recognized as one of the most picturesque part of Lake Malawi, within the Lake Malawi National Park which is home to hundreds of fish species, including the colourful cichlids.

Day 1 - 3: Stanley Safari Lodge

Your Family Safari begins at one of the 7 natural wonders of the world - The Victoria Falls! The Victoria Falls is where the wide Zambezi River simply drops some 100 meters into a narrow gorge. The Falls lie across the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe, and Livingstone is the town on the Zambian side. Called "Mosi-oa-Tunya", (the smoke that thunders) in the local language the Falls are one of the seven wonders of the world and when you first come to Zambia, Livingstone is a must visit destination.

Set on a hill bordering the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park and overlooking unspoilt bush, Stanley Safari Lodge is only three kilometer from the Victoria Falls. The views are splendid: the spray of the Falls in the distance, the mighty Zambezi River and on top of that yet another beautiful African sunset. There is a wide range of activities on offer in the area that can be booked at the lodge these include trips to see the falls, town museums and markets and sunset cruises. For the more adventurous, Livingstone boasts a whole host of adrenaline filled activities including whitewater rafting, bungee jumping and micro lighting. Or you may just wish to rest in camp and enjoy the spectacular scenery and peaceful atmosphere. It is up to you how you would like to spend your days here

Robin’s House

Day 4 - 6: Robin’s House

Many places claim to be "among the remaining wilderness areas" or "one of the last wildlife sanctuaries"; South Luangwa National Park lives up to both and more. Robin’s House lies on the banks of the Luangwa River with a stunning view across to the park and the escarpment. The house has two bedrooms, both with large bathrooms. The main area is both a sitting room and dining room. Most meals are taken outside under a huge ebony tree. During lunch animals and birds, including the hippo that live nearby in the river, will give a superb backdrop to the meal. The house has a private guide and host to look after every need.

The daily routine is determined by the individual family, from when meals are served to what activities take place every day is totally flexible. During your time at Robin's House, you have the option of 2 game activities per day, with the choice of a game drive or a walking safari and possibly a boating excursion depending on the water levels of the Luangwa River. We always recommend a visit to the community, by going to the Kawaza Village and School depending on the time of year. This is a day that is especially loved by children of all ages. You are able to join in at the school, meet children, play games, learn about their lives. The visit to the village gives further insight in the local life.

Pumulani Lodge

Day 7 - 9: Pumulani Lodge

The last stop on your family holiday is at the brightest star on Lake Malawi - Pumulani Lodge. David Livingstone famously named Lake Malawi “The Lake Of Stars” and for good reason, during the day the light dances across the deep blue water and once the sun has set the stars twinkle brightly both in the sky but also on the lake as the fishermen light up their hurricane lamps for their night on the lake. The Lodge is the ideal retreat for families welcoming children of all ages, the family villa specifically designed and positioned under the hillside on the lake shore allows children to play on the lawn under the mango trees in complete safety. Let our experienced team look after the children whilst mum and dad relax on the beach or go for a walk in the hills.

Spend the next few days doing as little or as much as you like. Our remote beach setting is ideal for those who simply want to soak up the sun and swim in the clear blue waters of the lake. Those who prefer to take a dive in the swimming pool, there is an infinity pool near the central dining area with grand views over the lake, as well as another infinity pool on beach level. For those seeking activity we offer many watersports activities like snorkelling, fishing, sailing, kayaking, waterskiing, wake boarding and fun tube rides (all motorized activities are excluded). At the end of the day climb aboard our dhow and let our experienced local crewmen take you sailing into the sunset. There is no chance of any family member being bored with so much to choose from.

Itinerary of Family Retreat by map

We had an amazing trip to Zambia with Robin Pope Safaris - our family of 6 stayed at 3 RPS properties and each lived up to the highest standards - incredible locations, intimate venues for the family, bush brunch or breakfast, magical sundowners, and simply amazing game viewing. Our four kids had a once in a lifetime opportunity. The staff at all the locations were amazing and cared for all of us.
Henry S about Family Retreat
We could not have imagined a better place or a more efficient organisation for our African adventure. We experienced the peace and beauty of African sunrises and sunsets and the awesome night-skies, and achieved total relaxation in the regular rhythm of our trip which gave us different experiences every day. An absolutely five star family holiday in every way.
