Description

Gonarezhou National Park, in Zimbabwe’s South-East Lowveld, covers just more than 5 000 km² of some of the most spectacular scenery in the region. Gonarezhou means ‘Place of Elephants’ and it could not have had a more appropriate name as it is home to about 11 000 elephants!

Located across the river from Gonarezhou National Park lies Chilo Gorge Safari Lodge. The lodge has 10 Rooms nestled amongst the bush and are wonderfully intimate, featuring a private balcony and seating area that will make you feel like the only person for miles. The main camp area is simple yet elegant, using natural materials to create an indulgent back-to-nature feel.

Wildlife

Gonarezhou is part of the Great Limpopo Transfontier Park (made up of Mozambique, South Africa and Zimbabwe) which means the Big Five and most big game is found here, though no rhino. All the big cats are available. This is a great park for sighting some rare antelopes, including nyala and suni. Other sighted antelopes include roan and sable. Cheetah is also said to be found here but sightings have been rare. Elephant, and buffalo populations are also in good concentration.

The Park is great for birding with over 400 species recorded.  Excellent time for birding here is November through to April when the migratory birds are present; although it’s still good throughout the year. Interestingly Narina trogons and Angola pittas are sighted here. Other key highlights are martial eagle, Pel’s fishing owl, African fish eagle, brown-headed parrot, and Lappet-faced vulture.
