A Valley & Lake Adventure

The safari combines the premier park in Zambia, The South Luangwa and the pristine shores of Lake Malawi.

The Luangwa Valley, which marks the end of the Great Rift Valley, is one of the last unspoiled wilderness areas and possibly the finest wildlife sanctuary in Africa. It covers an area of over 9000 sq. km. through which the meandering Luangwa River runs. The ox bow lagoons, woodland and plains of the valley host huge concentrations of game – including elephant, buffalo, leopard, lion, giraffe, hippo – and over 450 species of birds. During your time in the Luangwa Valley you will spend time at Luangwa River Camp & Tena Tena Camp.

After a week on safari, across the border in Malawi, you will spend a few days on the beach soaking up the sun on Lake Malawi. Situated on the west side of the Nankumba Peninsula on the Southern end of Lake Malawi you can find Pumulani Lodge subtly nestled in the lush hills amongst the trees and craggy outcrops. The ten villas provide the ultimate in space, design, comfort and privacy. The lodge offers the perfect mix for a memorable holiday. Enjoy being active or simply relax in the beautiful and tranquil scenery.

Day 1 - 3: Luangwa River Camp

Luangwa River Camp is a 10 bed camp (5 chalets only) situated opposite the Luangwa Wafwa in the Upper Lupande GMA. It is a small intimate camp offering tailored activities you expect from a bush camp. The camp is unique with its décor of locally crafted and handmade details. The main area is elevated on wooden decks affording great views to the park and river. The swimming pool is sunk into the deck on two levels with a waterfall adjoining the two pools. Seating areas are all elevated and open plan with a bar area as well as a dining and reading area.

Day 4 - 6: Tena Tena Camp

Next up on the Valley & Lake safari is our flagship camp, Tena Tena, situated on the banks of the Luangwa River, in the remote Nsefu sector on the north side of South Luangwa National Park. This is where Robin Pope Safaris was established back in 1986. The Nsefu sector was first pronounced a game reserve in 1966 some five years before the South Luangwa was even declared and has always been recognised as an outstanding game-viewing area.

A suggested day on safari at Tena Tena Camp starts with a hearty breakfast around the campfire, after which your morning activity will begin! Depending on time of year an all day picnic drive to the salt pans that will cover different habitats comes highly recommended and is an exceptional day’s safari. Nothing is set in stone and your days will be designed and planned with your bearing your interests in mind. You can mix and match activities to maximize your experience in this game rich and remote area of the Luangwa. One should also remember to make use of the viewing hide at Tena Tena Camp.

Day 7 - 10: Pumulani Lodge

Lake Malawi is the world’s most ecologically diverse lake. Its crystal clear waters are home to more than a thousand species of fish, including hundreds of species of colourful cichlids. We offer special diving courses at the best diving spots near one of the islands. For those who are interested in the real Malawian village life we offer guided walks through one of the local villages. This is the last stop on your Valley & Lake Safari, rest and relaxation is key, allowing you to do as little or as much as you like.

Pumulani Lodge is exclusively situated on the west side of the Nankumba Peninsula, surrounded by the Lake Malawi National Park. Over the next few days, you can choose to do as little or as much as you like in terms of activities. Our remote beach setting is ideal for those who simply want to soak up the sun and swim in the clear blue waters of the lake. Those who prefer to take a dive in the swimming pool, there is an infinity pool near the central dining area with grand views over the lake, as well as another infinity pool on beach level. For those seeking activity we offer many watersports activities like snorkeling, fishing, sailing, kayaking, waterskiing, wake boarding and fun tube rides (all motorized activities are excluded). At the end of the day sail into the sunset.

Our first trip to Africa couldn't have been more perfect. We stayed with Robin Pope Safaris... it was simply amazing. The staff were fantastic, and the guides were truly amazing!! e could not have been better cared for or more expertly guided. Superb experience in every respect. The final stage of a safari/beach break in Zambia was Pumulani, which provided a definite and hugely welcome step-change in relaxation. Everyone was very accommodating to our needs and I highly recommend Pumulani!
