Explore the Luangwa Valley
The unspoiled Luangwa Valley, made up of very distinct North and South Parks is one of natural jewels in Zambia’s crown, and home to one of the most varied collections of wildlife on the planet. The park offers a unique combination of landscapes, from grassy plains to mature and majestic woodlands. This area’s reputation for abundant wildlife and unspoiled vegetation precedes it.
The park is centered around the mighty Luangwa River. Untapped by man, its natural ebb and flow of flooding makes much of the park inaccessible by road which keeps it a sanctuary for the large concentration of game that live there. A paradise for birders, over 450 species are to be found in the park, and the wildlife includes elephant, buffalo, hippos, giraffe, leopards and lions.
Walk the Luangwa safari takes full advantage of what the Luangwa Valley has to offer – famous for excellent walking safari conditions. This itinerary allows for a good mix of safari on foot and game drives. You will start in the more animal-rich South Luangwa National Park, where you will make as many wildlife drives as possible at both Luangwa River Camp and Tena Tena Camp. In the north, at Mwaleshi Camp, the walks are the primary activity. The safari guides in both areas are highly motivated, highly qualified and experienced, and will greatly enhance your wilderness experience.

Day 3 - 5: Tena Tena Camp
Tena Tena Camp is next on your safari. This remote and intimate camp lies within the National Park, in the exclusive Nsefu Sector and enjoys a stunning location on a sweeping bend of the Luangwa River. A grove of mahogany trees shades the large custom-made tents. From the thatched dining room and bar, guests can watch the elephants, hippo and antelope on the riverbank. Tena Tena is synonymous with Robin Pope Safaris as it was the first camp which Robin opened and ran and has become a favourite amongst many safari lovers over the years. In terms of game activities, the flow is similar to that of Luangwa River Camp but bearing in mind you are in a completely new area with lots to see. Depending on the time of year, you will be able to access the hippo hide within the area giving you an opportunity to view game such as hippos, crocodiles and waterbirds within a closer proximity.
Mwaleshi is a beautifully rustic camp a short drive away from the airstrip. This owner-run camp consists of just four thatched chalets on the banks of the Mwaleshi River, a clear and year-round access to the Luangwa. The remote location of the camp corresponds to the lack of any path connections, so that the animal observation takes place mainly on foot. During a full-day excursion by off-road vehicle as well as on foot, the Mwaleshi Falls can be visited. The area is remote and very wild – a place for real bush lovers.
Accommodations, service, and food were top notch at all the camps during my stay. The staff, the guides, the chefs were all wonderful! A big thank you to everyone who made our trip so wonderful! Here's the problem,I want to return to South Luangwa like NOW! And this company has completely spoiled me! Thank you again, RPS, I'll be back!
This safari hit just the right note between great comfort and fitting in with its surroundings, the food was excellent, and the standard of guiding impressive. The staff did a brilliant job of managing everyone, providing a very relaxed - but efficient - atmosphere. And then, of course, the animals put on quite a spectacular show. South Luangwa is nothing short of incredible.
