Liuwa Plain National Park is truly one of the most remote and untouched wilderness areas in Africa. It is a place of abundance and diversity and home to one of the largest wildebeest populations in Africa. Every year thousands of blue wildebeest gather en masse and graze their way north and then southwards again following the numerous pans and nutritious forage it offers. It is situated in a remote section of Western Zambia. The prolific birdlife, vast open grasslands, and wildebeest migration make it one of Africa’s last true wildernesses and a huge attraction to the bush fundi.
King Lewenika is the only permanent camp in Liuwa Plains National Park. It has 6 open-fronted villas all tastefully decorated and offers spectacular views out onto the plains. This camp is named after King Lewanika of the Lozi people, who proclaimed Liuwa Plain a protected area in the early 1880s, making it one of the earliest game reserves in Africa.

This has had the Park being said to have the 2nd largest wildebeest migration, with an estimated 45,000 plus herd during the rainy season. Smaller herds of buffalo, red lechwe, eland, Lichtenstein’s hartebeest and roan antelope, reedbuck, and oribi are also common. Buffalo have been reintroduced into the Park and are increasing in number. Sitatunga have also been sighted on edge of the park. Predators of Liuwa include lion, leopard (not often seen), cheetah (numbers are growing steadily), wild dog and hyena. Sitatunga have also been sighted on edge of the park.

Crowned crane, wattled cranes, pelicans, storks (saddle-billed, yellow-billed, open-billed, marabou), herons, spoonbills, egrets, plovers, spur-winged, pygmy geese, egrets are sighted during the wet season, making for some exceptional birding.
