In 1905, European settlers founded Lusaka. It temporarily served as the capital of the British Colony of Northern Rhodesia, due to its convenient central location. In 1964, simultaneously with Zambia’s independence, Lusaka became the capital of Zambia. The name Lusaka has its origins in the village that first stood on the site of the town. Lusaka was the ancient leader of the local tribe in the village.
Lusaka is also known for its many markets. The New City Market and Kamwala Market are fun to stroll through. There are plenty of things sold. Think of fruits, vegetables and clothing. For souvenirs you can Kabwata Cultural Village.
