Wildlife

Mana Pools is renowned as one of Africa’s premier game viewing destinations, attracting large wildlife populations drawn to its water sources. The park boasts a healthy variety of plains game, including massive herds of elephants, buffalo, impala, kudu, zebra, eland, and various antelope species. It is famous for its large bull elephants, often seen feeding on their hind legs.

Predators such as lion prides and endangered wild dogs are commonly spotted, while more elusive species like leopard, cheetah, and spotted hyena also inhabit the park. Of the Big 5, only the rhino is absent from Mana Pools.

With over 380 bird species, the park is a birdwatcher’s paradise. Herons, storks, cormorants, darters, African fish eagles, and kingfishers are frequently seen around the waterways. In the dry months (August to November), the riverbanks come alive with vibrant colonies of carmine bee-eaters, while African skimmers and Pels’ fishing owl have also been sighted.
