Description

Bangweulu Swamps, which translates as: ‘where water meets the sky’, is a massive flooded wilderness of low islands, reed-beds, and shallow lagoons. It remains one of Zambia hidden gems and are also ‘Wetlands of International Importance under the RAMSAR Convention. Aside from the breathtaking scenery of the park, it also is a bird lovers paradise with superb birding from all the water birds to the endangered wattled crane elegantly strolling around the plains. Of course, the star attraction remains the extraordinary shoebill.

Shoebill Island Camp is perfectly located under a canopy of indigenous forest and overlooks the picturesque wetlands of Bangweulu. It’s a simple rustic bushcamp and is the perfect spot for travelers who have done other safaris before and want an offbeat experience.

Wildlife

The major highlight here is the rare Shoebill, found only in 5 countries in the world! This is birders paradise with lots of other great bird species including Wattled crane, African Openbll, Saddle-billed stork, Spurwing goose, Sacred Ibis, Lesser Jacana, lossy Ibis, Black-crowned Night Heron, Blue-breasted Bee-eater, Swamp Flycatcher, Pink- throated and Fulleborn’s Long claw, Denham’s Bustard and many ducks.

Outside of the excellent bird species the Park has some excellent plains game – including the endemic black lechwe is huge herds, oribi, tsessebe and sitatunga. Elephant, buffalo, reedbuck, Burchell’s zebra are other species found here.
