For those who have spent time with us at either Nsefu Camp, Tena Tena or Luangwa Bush Camping in South Luangwa, Zambia, the name Olimba will certainly be familiar. Meaning “strength” in the local language, it’s a name that couldn’t have suited her more. Sadly, after fourteen incredible years, Olimba’s time has come to an end – marking the close of a remarkable chapter in the Luangwa’s story.
Over the years, Olimba became one of South Luangwa’s most iconic leopards – admired for her resilience, beauty, and fierce behaviour. She was introduced to the world by award-winning filmmakers Will and Lianne Steenkamp, whose acclaimed documentary Leopard Legacy told her story from our very own backyard at Nsefu Camp (READ: Leopard Legacy – Behind the Scenes). A formidable hunter, a courageous ruler, and a devoted mother, she embodied everything her name represents. Will and Lianne, who are based at Nsefu Camp, recognised early on that she was something extraordinary, and it was they who named her Olimba – a name now almost as well-known in the Luangwa Valley as Robin Pope himself.
Her story continues through her offspring who roam the valley and in the hearts of everyone who encountered her. For those fortunate enough to have crossed paths with her, we’d love for you to share your stories, photos, and videos.
