Well, hello there. I hope that you are super well and have had a lovely weekend. This week we are heading over to Malawi to hear from the team there then a brief update at the end from Tena Tena. So first off Anneri over to you:
“It’s been a while since we last spoke, but it has been an amazing few months at Mkulumadzi. The vegetation is changing color taking on the more autumnal colour or we could just say hues of beige and this year it really feels like we skipped from summer to winter overnight and we are now all wrapping up nice and warm especially for the morning game drives.
The one benefit of the drying out of the bush is that everything thins out and so it’s much easier to spot animals in beautiful Majete. Amazing news is that the wild dogs have split and a pack of 10 have decided to make the shores of the Shire their home, so we have been seeing them more frequently and we even had a couple of groups both witness a waterbuck kill! So, as you can imagine that evening there was much excitement in camp and it’s just wonderful to see them doing so well. Watch: Majete Wild dogs create a roadblock.
Some days have been a bit quieter and other days jam packed with cheetah, leopard, wild dog, hyena, lions and elephant sightings all around. The black rhino has been avoiding us but hopefully it will make its appearance again very soon.
One of our guests recently stayed the night on our star deck and got some amazing photos of the night sky.
So, whether you are out on an exciting game drive, browsing in the curio shop or relaxing in the bath enjoying a glass of wine looking over the Shire, there is something for everyone at Mkulumadzi and we look forward to welcoming you soon.”
Wonderful thanks so much Anneri. Meanwhile here in the Luangwa Kanga left for the first Mobile Walking Safari of the season this week; we look forward to hearing from him when he is back. The camps have all been very busy indeed and the wildlife has been varied and always enthralling. At Tena Tena the male lion who is in the area seems to be taunting the team calling most nights and leaving footprints up and down the road, but they are yet to see him. I am sure when the rest of the pride move back into the area, he will show himself.
But let’s face it, it is not always about the predators and whilst we all freely admit they are awesome to see; the bush absolutely always delivers a variety of surprises and this week it has been the turn of the birds.
Jason was out with some guests at Tena Tena and had two amazing sightings; the first was an African Hawk Eagle stooping down and, on the wing, took out a duck in midair. The term duck being broad as it was all so fast that they didn’t have time to identify the poor victim. The second extraordinary sighting was a Bateleur coming down and catching a snake. Sadly, for the Bateleur there were some Ground Hornbills nearby and the ruckus alerted them to something happening and they all charged the Batleur scaring it off the snake and took the feast for themselves.
