Well hello there. I hope that you are fabulously well and have had a lovely weekend and are ready and raring for the week ahead. Here in Zambia we are all systems go with Luangwa River Camp having opened its doors for the season and the teams heading up to Nsefu and Tena Tena to start opening the camps. But this week instead of stories from the bush we are heading over to Lake Malawi again to hear from Kascha and the team at Pumulani.

Kascha over to you:

“This morning Lake Malawi is like ONE LARGE MIRROR in shades of grey/blue – making one stunning reflection. It takes your breath away every morning, and the single fisherman passing by paints a perfect picture.

The Lake has been filled to its brim by the influx of water from the rivers. The high-water level has impacted the environment and both tourism and the communities had to adapt. It is great to have guests back in “town”. Most are escaping the last bit of the cold in Europe and the USA and are embracing the diverse experiences of Lake Malawi and its surrounding mountains as well as the local villages and various water activities. Not to mention the magnificent night sky.

The Pumulani Team has being waiting in anticipation for them, and it is great to be a part of creating special memories for all our travelers. They all come packed with energy ready to explore, experience and enjoy the scenic wonder of Lake Malawi. Early mornings have been reserved for hiking – whether up the mountain, or down to star beach – it has definitely been the best way to see the fauna and flora, bird life and the stunning view from the top.

Tours to the village emphasized the cultural richness and traditions of the Malawian people. With guests thoroughly enjoying the traditional dances, arts and crafts and observing the local way of life. A huge thank you to the many who help us support the communities.

The crystal clear- water at Thebi Island did not disappoint and we have had some amazing snorkeling – and as always, the fish eagles along the way made the trips extra special. After jam packed days of activity – the pool has been sought out to cool down and relax. Late afternoons – a trip on the traditional Dhow for sunset has been a must – and certainly a magical end to any day.

Dining has been a highlight for many with beautiful back drop of stars on the Lake. The main area provides a “family space” – where card games, chess and Boa gets mastered. Some toasted marshmallows, or a night cap around the fire has been the perfect dessert. Godfrey has ensured that each guest gets a look through the telescope to see the Moon, Mars and Venus up close– for many a once in a lifetime opportunity. This activity is always a highlight at Pumulani.

All in all, it has been a wonderful start to the 2024 season, we are looking forward to the rest of it – sharing all the wonder of Lake Malawi – the cultural, stars, fish, activities, and the warm heart of the people.”

Wonderful, thanks so much Kascha, so much happening… I can almost imagine myself at the Lake. But before I drift off into a dreamworld, let me pull myself back to say a fond farewell for this week. Have yourself a splendid week ahead with plenty of smiles and laughter and don’t forget to look after one another.
