When thinking of a safari, most people picture open plains, dusty roads, chugging along in a game vehicle, but there’s another magical safari — one that takes place in February and March in Zambia on the open waters of the Luangwa River, during the most underrated time of the year, the Emerald Season. We call it River Journeys and it is a safari unlike any other. It offers a chance to see the South Luangwa in a way that few people do — from the water.

Your journey begins at Nkwali Camp, a safari camp known for its exceptional wildlife sightings and beautiful landscapes. For two days, you’ll glide through this flooded wonderland, where the river stretches beyond its usual borders, offering stunning views of wildlife and lush vegetation. As you navigate the waters enjoying the wildlife from a different perspective, you’ll catch glimpses of lions lounging on the waters edge, elephants frolicking in the water, birds flying overhead, and crocs sunbathing. The usual game drives are available as well, giving you 3 different ways to enjoy your exploration – foot, vehicle and boat. Keen birders are spoilt with the inclusion of the migratory birds this time of year!

After two days of exploration at Nkwali Camp, it’s time to move on—but no need to say your final goodbyes, as you’ll return to Nkwali Camp for two additional nights at the end of your safari. As you journey further up the Luangwa River to your next destination, Nsefu Camp, you’ll be surrounded by breath-taking views and abundant wildlife. This is far more than just a transfer; it’s an extension of your safari, with plenty to see along the way, from pods of hippos to vibrant kingfishers darting across the water. Once you arrive at Nsefu Camp, you’ll spend the next three days immersed in the stunning landscape, where the ebony groves and the famous stork colony take center stage. By this time of year, hundreds of yellow-billed storks have gathered to roost, creating a lively and fascinating spectacle. Here you will enjoy a mix of walking safaris and boating only.

While this safari differs from the usual, with its extra focus on water-based adventures, you won’t miss out on classic safari experiences such as afternoon siestas, enjoying time in the camps and of course, the essential safari sundowners to wrap up each day. Stretching your legs on a few walking safaris, our guides will lead you through drier patches of land, introducing you to more hidden gems of the South Luangwa wilderness.

So if you’re looking for a safari that breaks the mould and offers a fresh perspective on the African wilderness, River Journeys is an adventure you won’t want to miss.

See you in the bush!
