Well, hello there. I hope that you are well and have had a marvelous weekend. Here in the Luangwa the season is in full swing and everything is now open and running at 110 m/ph. with so much happening, now where to start…
Well, I guess we could quickly head to Lower Zambezi, on location for Kujana Camp – first time for an Its Monday. Rob and I have just returned from the site, and the building team is in full swing. Whilst there is little to show yet, because it’s all just blocks and gravel, I cannot wait to get there for longer to start putting the camp together.
Accommodation is somewhat on the rustic side at the moment so maybe I didn’t spend as long there as Rob! but that doesn’t take away from the sheer beauty of the area. Views aside there has been some amazing wildlife seen in and around camp. Just on the periphery of camp there has been a magnificent python spotted on a couple of occasions. Last month an entire pride of lion parked themselves in the middle of camp so needless to say no work happened that day.
Elephants visit daily and buffalo can frequently be seen looking on with a certain amount of curiosity. We were also incredibly fortunate to see wild dog on the way in and one of the females was very pregnant which is very exciting news indeed. When I next go back it will be for the final push to get camp open and then we will have lots more stories for you as over that period we have a list of jobs carved out – I will be putting everything in place. Rob will be checking out walking areas and game drive loops and Jack will be finding the good fishing spots. We can’t wait to update you.
Heading back to the Luangwa, there is no doubting that the season is in full swing. Mutima is looking absolutely amazing and has been seen regularly keeping control of her mum’s territory and following her habits with preferred hunting grounds and tree relaxation.
The Kasikizi female leopard that I spotted a couple of years ago with cubs is flying solo once more and is becoming a regular for the guests at Tena Tena as she loves using the four-ways gully for hunting and just this week was spotted up a tree post baboon reduction exercise just holding onto the head. A little gruesome but she was happy and spent the entire day relaxing and posing for the guests.
Our Mobile Walking Safaris have got off to a cracking start this season and the Mupamadzi is incredibly busy with wildlife already. The night times are spent listening to the lots of lion and leopard calling and the sightings during the day have been fantastic with so much plains game including sightings of Roan, Eland, Buffalo, Giraffe, Zebra and loads of elephants. If the season has already started like this, it’s going to be an absolute corker, and I can’t wait to get up there. One particular morning walk between camps 2 and 3 the guests arrived in camp ready to kick their shoes off and have a nice cold drink, but Nicole had some news for them. It was time to bypass the bar and keep on going as 5 minutes’ walk from camp were 3 lions just chilling on the open plain under an acacia tree. The lions were so preoccupied watching some elephants in the distance that they didn’t even notice the guests, and they snuck in and snuck out totally undercover.
What a wonderful start to the season.
